Scherzer deal uncrosses Foy fingers

MYRTLE BEACH (SC)—Brick Church took a chance when they acquired Rafael Devers, Justin Steele and Max Scherzer and his huge contract from New England. "They crossed their fingers. They hoped to keep free agent Clayton Kershaw," said scribe Slick Rhodes. "That plan didn't work out."

In the end, the Foys surpassed the Ted Williams Cap (406 shekels), thanks in part to Scherzer's salary (198s). They could not afford Kershaw nor Marcell Ozuna. "BVL titles are not won by crossing fingers,” Rhodes explained. "Let's see if they can afford to sign Mookie Betts next year. Fingers crossed."

Salaries reach record high
Combine the five free agents who received maximum deals (5 years/57s per), 12 multi-year contracts in the 6-shekel market, plus Scherzer and Freddie Freeman's 3-figure deals, and it's no surprise BVL salaries reached a record high (6.67s per player).

A year ago, the average salary was 6.3s.

The Williams cap remains in place for next season, as only two clumps surpassed the Norm Cash Cap (377s).
